SC&RA Rigging Job of the Year 2006

Each year the Rigging Job of the Year Award is presented by the Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association (SC&RA). The award is designed to honor and give recognition to members that perform outstanding achievements in solving problems encountered in our industry. Points are awarded through the following criteria: Safety, Innovation and Ingenuity, Engineering and Planning and Limitations.

Dresser-Rand subcontracted Southern Industrial to remove an existing condenser from its second floor location in the Cogeneration Power Plant at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and then to reinstall a new condenser in the same location. Southern Industrial self-performed all of this rigging work, and utilized no sub-subcontractors.

The original condenser weighed 60,000 lbs, was 20 ft. long and 8 ft. in diameter.

The replacement condenser weighed 80,000 lbs, was 24 ft. long and 9 ft. in diameter.

The room was only 22 ft. wide allowing only 1” of clearance - a unique challenge requiring detailed planning, ingenuity and "good old fashioned rigging."
