Starting with this November 2002 award ceremony, IRMI renamed its annual award the Gary E. Bird Horizon Award in honor of Gary E. Bird, a nationally known risk management expert whose life was taken on September 11, 2001.  Mr. Bird was a senior vice president with Marsh, Inc., and he was in the Marsh offices of the World Trade Center when the building was destroyed in the terrorist attacks.  The renamed award recognizes and remembers Gary Bird’s significant and cutting-edge risk management solutions and his contributions to the risk management community.

In November, 2002, the International Risk Management Institute, Inc. (IRMI) recognized Southern Industrial’s Safety Program with the award of IRMI’s 22nd Annual Construction Risk Management Best Practices Award

Southern Industrial’s Corporate Safety Director was nominated for this award by The Travelers Insurance Company for designing and implementing an industry leading safety program at Southern Industrial demanding participation and accountability by all levels within the organization.  The other two finalists were BE&K, Inc., and the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

In 1988, IRMI created this national award to promote the awareness of innovative risk management techniques and processes that have proven to be cost-efficient and effective in the construction industry.
